Well, we have to admit that Candy Crush Saga is an awesome game.  

The reason for its success and popularity is due to a variety of factors; simple match-three game design which is welcomed by all age, attractive artwork, timingof virals, free-to-play model and so on.

A few characteristics that make Candy Crush Saga different than other match-three games is as follow:

Saga style map offers a strong sense of progression and goal

Face pile (profile picture) of friends on the map creates a more  visual and salient leaderboard.  This can increase competition and motivation to play.

Candy Crush Saga slowly introduces new obstacles to the standard match-3 game (jelly,  black liquorice cage and whorl, chocolate, different shaped grids, etc.)
